The Engineering College Magazines Associated (ECMA) was founded in 1920 by five of its current members. There are approximately forty schools in the U.S. that have engineering or scientific magazines, twenty of which are ECMA members. While the business of publishing magazines would seem to fall outside of their discipline, engineering students have been doing so with gusto for decades. ECMA is a great source of support and knowledge for engineering students involved in publication.
ECMA holds an annual national conference that provides magazine staff members an opportunity to improve their magazine. Communications industry experts are invited to hold workshops on magazine management, writing, editing, production, sales, and other topics pertinent to promoting excellence in engineering magazines.
In an effort to recognize excellence in engineering college magazines, ECMA also organizes an annual magazine contest judged by experts in the publishing industry. California Engineer is proud to have hosted the annual conference in 2000. If you are interested in obtaining more information, please visit the official ECMA website.
